For a long time I have been looking for something to hang on the big wall above Hudson's crib. I finally settled on the idea of a chalkboard and the search was on for either a suitable ready-made chalkboard or a frame I could make into one myself. Finally I found something suitable at the Salvation Army thrift store - it was originally a shiny gold frame filled with a mirror. I bought it, brought it home, and left it in the garage for a month. Then I bought cans of spray paint to prime and paint the frame "heirloom white" as well as chalkboard paint for the center. The one problem in my project is that I didn't do too much research on ideal surfaces for chalkboard paint. I spray painted particle board, which ended up looking okay, but not great, and is really grainy so chalk will go on but not erase. I then learned that mirror is a great surface, so soon I plan to paint the mirror and replace the particle board. But in the meantime my friend Kara has great chalk-manship and she did up a design on Hudson's chalkboard.
My first do-it-yourself project is mostly a success and I think it looks really good in Hudson's room.
